Many of our patients ask us what is the difference between a day spa and a medical spa (also known as a medispa or a medspa). At first glance there may seem to be no significant difference between a medical spa and a day spa. A closer investigation will prove that while some similarities exist, there is, indeed, quite a distinction between the two.
Similarities and Differences
There are many similarities that overlap in how both types of spas function as well as the services they offer.
Aimed at enhancing the outward appearance while indulging clientele in a refreshing experience, a day spa offers services, such as manicures, pedicures, massages, facials and other pampering treatments, with results that don’t typically last beyond a few days or perhaps a week. The peaceful ambiance is ideal for rejuvenation and relaxation. Visiting a day spa feels more like going on a vacation.
Short for medical spa, a med spa is a hybrid between a day spa and a medical clinic. It utilizes medical-grade skincare products and techniques.
In a day spa, services are performed by a licensed esthetician. Med spas function and operate under the highly qualified supervision of a specialized medical doctor. A Board Certified Physician Assistant performs all services.
Medical Spa Services
While treatment options will vary between locations, most med spas will offer a similar variation of the following services.
• Body contouring treatments
• Dermal fillers and other injectables like BOTOX®
• Cellulite reduction
• Chemical peels
• Intense pulsed light treatments (IPL)
• Laser hair removal
• Laser skin resurfacing
• Liquid facelifts
• Microdermabrasion
Benefits of a Medical Spa
When visiting a med spa managed by a certified plastic surgeon, treatment options expand far beyond merely anti-aging procedures, opening up the possibility of combining surgical treatments, such as an eyelid lift, with those that are less invasive. Treatments are performed using state-of-the-art equipment in order to bring about firmer, younger looking skin in an environment that feels like a serene escape.
Though a visit to a med spa will certainly involved a luxurious experience, treatments are aimed providing more dramatic and longer lasting results that go beyond the skin’s surface to create a true anti-aging effect. Med spas are no longer characterized by a clinical atmosphere. With a focus on overall wellness, the general feel is much like that of a day spa.
Treatment plans are customized to fulfill the wants, needs and concerns of each individual client with health and safety as the utmost priorities.
